Ever wonder what a peaceful life would look like? Just as fruit fails to grow and/or rots when the wrong conditions and nurturing are not met (wrong amount of air, water, soil, etc.), so can life go awry, when we fail to nurture and develop our own conditions. Every day, we make decisions that shape our lives. Our days are determined by one of two driving forces, our flesh or our spirit. So who/what we turn to each and every day to help navigate this journey makes all the difference in the quality of life we live. As like the old adage says, “Life is a series of choices.” It is during the more difficult moments and storms in our lives that our character is tested and our peace is potentially impacted. “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25, so to live a life of peace.
Welcome back to my blog. I hope you have been reaping the blessings that the word of God bestows unto our lives. I pray this message continues to seed the goodness of God in you and fuels you with the strength to stay the course. “For neither herb nor poultice cured them, but it was thy word, O Lord, which heals all men.” Wisdom 16:12.
The good news is that the Holy Spirit is an inheritance given to all believers, Ephesians 1:13-14 reads, "In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory." The question is, how do we “activate” the Spirit?
Newton’s first Law of (e)Motion teaches us that every emotion tends to remain in that state of emotion, unless an external force is applied to it. For example, if someone yells at us, we immediately begin our reaction. It may be to yell back, or escalate the matter, get angry, argue, etc. So, if we want our emotion to change, we have to do something to change it. Or else, it stays the same. John Wesley, an English theologian, described as one of the kindest men that ever lived said, “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the places you can, at all times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you can.” What a great description of how we are called to live by our Lord and Savior. So, how do we begin to change our behavior and come to bear true spiritual fruit [Fruit of the Spirit]? Galatians 5:22-23 reads, “22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” In short, these are a set of characteristics differentiating those endowed by the Holy Spirit from everyone else. I know we all are familiar with these characteristics, but as we read through a more biblical description, my question is, do you truly exhibit these characteristics in their truest meaning?

Walking with the Spirit, living by these conditions or characteristics is not an easy walk but it is a rewarding walk. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9. Salvation does not reform us; it transforms us to live in the Spirit. When we allow the Holy Spirit to take the lead in our life, we become self-disciplined, we grow and develop these and other Godly characteristics. If you’re feeling discouraged, defeated, angry, hurt, anxious — there is a better quality of life available to you. I invite you to embark on an intimate walk with the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, we know people by their fruit. He warned his followers to be wary, “By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.” Matthew 7:16-20.
Everything God tells us is important. If we allow the Holy Spirit control over our life and resist the flesh, whether in the little things or things we don’t want to do or rather do, we will proclaim success and victory in all things. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand.” John 10:27 – 28.
